The introduction to your cover letter should outline the positive qualities you have and why they would be a good fit for the job for which you are applying. Avoid stating the obvious fact that you're writing to apply for a job; instead, focus on selling yourself to the human resources management–although you are applying for a position, remember that the company needs personnel who can fill specific needs.
